چکیده

The primary objective of this research is to develop predictive, year-round habitat models of the presence of calling blue and fin whales in the Southern California Bight (SCB). We will also investigate the scales over which blue and fin whales respond to their environment to better understand the functionality of the predictive relationships in those models. We will base our models on the available passive acoustic and remotely sensed data, as well as the lunar and buoy data available for the SCB.

15: Modeling of Habitat and Foraging Behavior of Beaked Whales in the Southern California Bight

The overall goal of this project was to improve our understanding of beaked whale distribution and foraging behavior and to describe inter-specific differences. We investigated spatio-temporal patterns for Cuvier’s beaked whale and a beaked whale producing echolocation signal type BW43 in the Southern California Bight using passive acoustic encounters, comparing data gathered from line transect...

Modeling of Habitat and Foraging Behavior of Beaked Whales in the Southern California Bight

The overall goal of this project is to improve our understanding of beaked whale distribution and foraging behavior and to describe inter-specific differences. We are developing habitat models for multiple beaked whale species in the Southern California Bight using passive acoustic encounters. Data from line transect surveys and autonomous recorders are compared with dynamic and static oceanogr...

Temporal separation of two fin whale call types across the eastern North Pacific

Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) produce a variety of low-frequency, short-duration, frequency-modulated calls. The differences in temporal patterns between two fin whale call types are described from long-term passive acoustic data collected intermittently between 2005 and 2011 at three locations across the eastern North Pacific: the Bering Sea, off Southern California, and in Canal de Balle...

Passive acoustic monitoring using a towed hydrophone array results in identification of a previously unknown beaked whale habitat.

Beaked whales are diverse and species rich taxa. They spend the vast majority of their time submerged, regularly diving to depths of hundreds to thousands of meters, typically occur in small groups, and behave inconspicuously at the surface. These factors make them extremely difficult to detect using standard visual survey methods. However, recent advancements in acoustic detection capabilities...

Blue and fin whale acoustic presence around Antarctica during 2003 and 2004

Seasonal and spatial variations of blue (Balaenoptera musculus) and fin whale (B. physalus) calls were analyzed from recordings collected with Acoustic Recording Packages (ARPs) deployed between January 2003 and July 2004 at four circumpolar locations: the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), the Scotia Sea (SS), Eastern Antarctica (EA), and the Ross Sea (RS). Call characteristics were compared a...
